Just as parents, teachers, and other caregivers need to be aware of the signs of ADHD children display in order to be able to recognize them, they also should be aware of things they can do in order to make the child's life a bit easier, so that they can be understanding of ADHD for children. Understanding Hyperactivity-Impulsivity

Children with Hyperactivity-Impulsivity ADHD are the ones who never seem to be able to sit still and act or speak without thinking it through very well. As a result of this, if you are responsible for the care of a child affected by this form of ADHD, you should:

o Remember that they will have problems with being able to sit still, so try not to be too hard on them if they cannot. Be stern and assert the importance of your request, while doing what you can to accommodate the problem.

o Remind them to slow down and think before they act and speak. When they act impulsively, show the consequence while offering to show the reward for thinking things through.

Understanding Inattention

Children with Inattention ADHD are the ones who are unable to concentrate and focus on things that they do not enjoy, and the ones who tend to make more frequent careless mistakes. If you are responsible for the care of a child affected by this form of ADHD, you should:

o Find ways to make the activity enjoyable so they gain interest in it. Children who active interest in something have less difficulty paying attention to it.

o Engage many different interests and activities for variety and to lessen the overall difficulty.

o Set routines to help children remember the things they need and to make sure they have them all.

Remember though that some children are affected by Combined ADHD and will display signs and symptoms of both forms of ADHD. When this occurs, you should take care to remember what to do in both situations and apply the tactics together as necessary.
By understanding ADHD for children, you are doing both yourself and the children a favor. You will better be able to help children deal with the disorder, and you will be able to reach them on a level that others may not be able to.
